There are more than 2,000 villages in Vietnam now, specializing in 11 groups of major traditional crafts including sedge, rattan and bamboo wickerwork, lacquer, porcelain, embroidery and lace-making, weaving, wood carving, folk paintings and metal ware. Of which 1,594 villages are from northern provinces; 111 villages from the central region, and the remainder from southern provinces. Rattan and bamboo knitting is the country's leading traditional craft practiced in 713 villages, followed by weaving (432 villages), wood carving (342 villages), embroidery and lace-making (341 villages), sedge (261 villages) and metal ware (204 villages). The craft villages involve around 1.4 million households. They use domestic materials to make products, thus attaining a high conomic profit. A number of craft villages are facing difficulties, including poor infrastructure facilities, low managerial skills, and shortages of investment capital and skilled workers.

Traditional Vietnamese handicrafts achieved target of US$1,000 million, up 20%. Handicraft shipments to the USA, EU, Japan, Kerea market have in recent years grown remarkably. The sector has also successfully entered new markets like Africa and Southwest Asia. The handicraft sector achieve the export target of US$1.5 billion by 2010 with annual export growth of more than 20%.

Vietnam Association of Crafts Villages (VICRAFTS) is Non-profit Oganization, Spontaneous, Social and Occupational Oganization of traditional crafts villages, of enterprises,  of economic and cultural oganizations, researchers, training agencies ect. in Vietnam in order to preserve, restore and development crafts villages.

The website contribute to assists craft villages, enterprises to achieve export growth targets. For this purpose, Vicrafts will help Craft villages, local handicraft producers promote export strategy and strengthen its capacity as the focus for trade development worldwide.
